photos for your website

Why They Matter and How to Get Them Right
Quality photos are an essential part of website design. They attract attention and help create the right impression of you and what you’re offering. This is a little checklist you can save or share with your photographer :)
What types of photos might you need for a website?

  • Portraits of the business owner and/or the whole team
  • Any working processes
  • Product photos on a neutral background, catalog style
  • "In-action" shots that show how the product is meant to be used
  • Before-and-after shots (for services)
  • Close-ups: hands, small items, product details
  • Interior shots of your office, workshop, or studio
  • Any other details you consider essential

It’s ideal if you can do a special photoshoot just for the website. This way, all the images will share a consistent style and look great together.

Key tips to keep in mind:

  • Use a camera and good lighting for people shots. If you’re using a phone, make sure to shoot in daylight or with carefully set-up lighting. For product photos, it’s also best to stick with natural or studio lighting.
  • Sharpness and focus. People in the photos should be clear and in focus. Blurry images can come across as unprofessional or careless.
  • Keep clothing simple. Plain colors work best, with no small patterns, logos, or bright prints. If you’re photographing a group, make sure their outfits complement each other in color and style.
  • Color scheme. If your website has a particular color palette, try to coordinate with it. Neutral colors (white, black, beige) are always safe choices. And yes, this goes for kids' outfits too!
  • Simple background. The simpler and more neutral, the better. Clear away anything that doesn’t fit with your site’s theme, like bright kitchen towels, road signs, or other distracting details.
  • Avoid visible logos and branding. Keeping logos out of frame helps avoid visual clutter and potential copyright issues.
Remember, every detail counts. Thoughtful, well-planned photos are a great way to tell your story.
